 Answers:

1.      What are the SMS Digipass and Digipass APP, and which one should I get?

The new Digipass SMS & APP are two new types of Digipass which have been in use since February 2017 for generating One Time Passwords (OTPs) for transaction confirmation and authentication via the 1bank digital channels. Also, the Digipass APP may be used to generate OTPs for sending instructions via fax as well as to generate a passcode for login to 1bank.

The new Digipass devices provide enhanced security, as the unique code generated is specific to each transaction, such as the type of transaction, the payee’s account, the currency, the amount etc.

Holders of the Digipass Go3 are advised to acquire the SMS Digipass.

Holders of the Digipass 550 or 320, used to send instructions via fax and/or to generate passcodes for login to 1bank, are advised to acquire the Digipass APP. Alternatively, if Digipass App is not used for either of the above, you may acquire the SMS Digipass.

2.      Why must I replace my current Digipass security device?

Under the EU’s Payment Services Directive 2015/2366 (PSD2) and the Provision and Use of Payment Services and Access to Payment Systems Law of 2018, Banks are required to implement stronger customer authentication for the purpose of securing online payments.

Specifically, as stated in the security measures described in the RTS (Regulatory Technical Standard), where payment service providers apply strong customer authentication, in accordance with article 97, paragraph 2 of EU Directive 2015/2366, in addition to the requirements of article 4 of this regulation, they shall also adopt security measures that meet each of the following requirements:

a) the payer is made aware of the amount of the payment transaction and of the payee;

b) the authentication code generated is specific to the amount of the payment transaction and the payee agreed to by the payer when initiating the transaction;

c) the authentication code accepted by the payment service provider corresponds to the original specific amount of the payment transaction and to the identity of the payee agreed to by the payer;

d) any change to the amount or the payee results in the invalidation of the authentication code generated.

Based on the aforementioned security measures as set out in the EU Directive, old Digipass security devices (Go3, 550, 320 models) are non-compliant. It is for this reason that Bank of Cyprus developed the new types of Digipass SMS & Digipass APP which are fully compliant with the new requirements.

3.      Until when can I use my current Digipass device?

Under the EU’s Payment Services Directive /PSD2, in force since 13 January 2018, the security measures as described in the RTS shall apply 18 months later. As such, the use of the old Digipass security devices (Go3, 550, 320) will be terminated as from 13 September 2019.

 4.      Will I be charged for the new SMS Digipass & Digipass APP?

Concerning the purchase cost for the new Digipass, we have made an effort to keep the charges low (€10 for SMS Digipass & €20 for Digipass APP); this amount is charged only once and covers our development and international licensing expenses.

One major advantage is that it won’t need replacement due to battery depletion or deterioration/damage of the display etc., in contrast to the old Digipass devices where the cost was €40 for the Digipass 550 & 320 and €10 for the Digipass Go3.

 5.      How do I acquire one of the new Digipass SMS & APP?

Subscribers who own one of the old Digipass devices (GO3, 550, 320) can easily acquire one of the new Digipass SMS or Digipass APP via Internet Banking by selecting Settings > Digipass Management > Apply for New. Once you have completed your purchase of the Digipass, you may activate it by selecting Settings > Digipass Management > Activate/Switch Usage. Both these actions require the use of your current Digipass device.

If you own a Digipass 550 or 320 device which is used for sending instructions through fax and your access level in 1bank is limited for viewing account (unable to carry out transactions), you should visit one of our Branches and complete the relevant application form to replace your current device.

If you have lost your current device, or if your device is not operational, in order to acquire one of the new Digipass SMS or APP, you will need to visit one of our stores and fill out the application form.

6.      What are the advantages of the SMS Digipass & Digipass APP over the older devices (GO3, 550, 320)?

Contrary to your current Digipass devices, when using the new Digipass SMS or APP you will no longer need to carry with you any particular device in order to authenticate your banking transactions. You will only need to carry with you:

  • Your mobile phone (for SMS Digipass), since with the SMS Digipass the One Time Passwords (OTPs) are sent via sms to the mobile phone number registered in the Bank’s records;
  • Your personal mobile device, a mobile phone/tablet (for Digipass APP), since One Time Passwords (OTPs) are generated through the Application (app) on the smart device on which you have installed Digipass APP.

Not only are the new Digipass easy to use, they won’t need replacement due to battery depletion or deterioration/damage of the display etc., as is the case with current Digipass devices.

Also, due to enhanced security, the new Digipass allow you to select higher electronic transaction limits if you apply in writing for one of the two types.

 7.      What is the difference between the SMS Digipass and the Digipass APP?

The main difference between these two Digipass relates to the manner in which the One Time Password is generated/received. More specifically, on the SMS Digipass a password unique to a transaction (OTP) is sent via sms to the mobile phone number registered in the Bank’s records. On the Digipass APP, the One Time Password is generated by using the App on the smart device on which you have installed the Digipass APP. In addition, the Digipass APP may be used to generate One Time Passwords for sending instructions via fax, as well as to generate a passcode for login to 1bank.

SMS Digipass

SMS Digipass authenticates money transactions carried out via the 1bank channels using an OTP. You receive the password via SMS on the mobile phone number registered in the Bank’s records. A unique password is generated for each transaction taking into consideration basic transaction data, such as the type of transaction, the payee’s account, the amount etc.

Specifically, following purchase and activation of your SMS Digipass, upon submitting each of your transactions through any of the 1bank channels - which requires the use of an OTP – you will receive an SMS on the mobile phone number registered in the Bank of Cyprus records. The message contains the OTP and the basic data of the transaction (the basic data is proof that the OTP you have received is associated to your transaction). You must then enter this OTP in your transaction, to complete it.

Note: since an OTP is sent via SMS message, in the event the Bank does not have your correct mobile phone number you will need to make arrangements to change the mobile phone number to the correct one. This can be done by either contacting the Call Centre or online using Internet Banking (the transaction requires Digipass).

Digipass APP

Digipass APP is available via the Bank of Cyprus App which you may download to your mobile device via the App Store or Google Play.

By using an OTP generated on Digipass APP, you authenticate an electronic transaction you carry out via the 1bank channels. The OTP is generated specifically for each of your transactions, taking into consideration basic transaction data, such as: the type of transaction, the beneficiary’s account, the currency, the amount etc.

To be able to apply and use the Digipass App, follow the steps below:

  • Purchase the Digipass APP by either filling out the relevant application or, if you already possess a Digipass device, via Internet Banking.
  • Setup Digipass APP on at least one mobile device, as explained on our website in the paragraph under the heading “Setup” or as described in the tutorial video.
  • Activate your Digipass APP via Internet Banking or by contacting the Call Centre at 800 00 800 or 003572212800 if calling from abroad.

Having successfully completed the above steps upon submitting each of your transactions through any of the 1bank channels - for which an OTP is required - you can use the Digipass APP to generate an OTP through the NOTIFICATION option or by scanning the displayed QR Code.
